Quotation 3

I am your spaniel. And, Demetrius; The more you beat me, I will fawn on you. Use me but as your spaniel—spurn me, strike me. Neglect me, lose me. Only give me leave,
Unworthy as I am, to follow you.
- Helena 2.1.190-195
Helena tells Demetrius about Lysander and Hermia's plan to flee Athens together. Helena follows Demetrius through the forest even after he tells her to leave him alone and that she was annoying. He talks to her like she is garbage, he repeatedly tells her that he can't stands to look at her because she makes him sick. Helena then still follows him telling him that she feels sick when she can't look at him. Demetrius asks why Helena follows him as he does not speak kindly to her, she then responds with this quote. This relates to the theme because what Helena feels for Demetrius is genuine love. Helena continues to follow this man who does not love her back, she disregards his mistreatments because of how deeply she has fallen in love with Demetrius.
