Quotation 6

“I could step into that alley, stand up for Hassan––the way he’s stood up for me all those times in the past–– and accept what would happen to me. Or I could run. In the end, I ran”
- Amir, Hosseini, 65
Amir and Hassan participated in a kite running game, when the string of the kite gets severed, the loser has to run after the drifting kite. Hassan was the loser, Amir looks for him and sees him in an alley way pinned up against the wall by Assef with their pants down. Amir could've stood up for Hassan like the ways the latter has stood up fo him. Amir so badly wanted the winning kite to gain his father's approval that he didn't stop his friend from experiencing a sexual assault. This relates to the theme because Amir betrayed Hassan for being a coward, ironically, Baba always wanted Amir to be a brave and courageous boy and he couldn't even do that.
