Quotation 8

"I flinched, like I'd been slapped. My heart sank and I almost blurted out the truth. Then I understood; this was Hassan's last sacrifice for me."
- Amir, Hosseini, 88

Having seen what had happened to his friend, Amir's guilt was filling up to its brim. He needed to get rid of Hassan, he didn't want to be reminded of what he did or lack there of and so, Amir slips his watch underneath Hassan's pillow. The older boys tells Baba that Hassan stole money and stole his watch. Baba asks Hassan straight up whether or not he stole, he answered yes. Amir felt so guilty he wanted to tell the truth, but he just let it happen once again. Ali and Hassan left the house, even after Baba told them it was alright for them to stay. This relates to the theme because it shows Hassan's loyalty for Amir. He didn't want the latter to get into trouble and he sacrificed himself for his friend.
